At Tessian, we're building machine-intelligent filters to secure enterprise communications. This involves high volume, low latency data processing for some of the world’s largest organisations. Our mission is to keep the world’s most sensitive data private and secure - to do this we're looking for backend engineers to help build out our platform supporting our next stage of growth. The backend systems power the whole company and our teams have touch points with all of our engineering teams. From deploying data science models in production to integrating with our front end, you'll be involved in projects that span all aspects of the business. Our teams are made up of people from diverse backgrounds; some have been building Python systems for years and some have learnt the ins and outs of Python on the job. We are currently hiring for senior (0-5+ years) engineers.

As a Tessian Backend Engineer you will

• Design reliable distributed systems that handle high volumes of data with low latency
• Maintain and support business-critical systems
• Ship code to production every day using CI/CD techniques
• Tackle the challenges that come with processing highly sensitive data
• Value security over box-ticking
• Make your mark on ambitious projects

Job Overview:

We are seeking a Engineering team Leader to help build out our RESTful .NET Core API, our React web app and supporting systems. This person will hire, develop, and coordinate a team working on these systems while closely integrating with an existing team in the Denver office. The ideal candidate is no stranger to building well-designed, performant and effective applications that support complex business rules and workflows.

You will start by learning from the experiences of our existing team as you become intimately familiar with our technology stack. At the same time, you will begin recruiting to build out a cross-functional team of full stack engineers in the London office located near Farringdon. For the first year you are expected to spend 50% of your time developing and 50% of your time recruiting to build the team. As you build your team, you will begin to shift recruiting time to management and hands on guidance of your team. 

You will leverage your experience to help establish best practices and drive the team and the codebase to a higher level. You will collaborate with our Denver office on a daily basis and will occasionally have the opportunity to travel to that office to help integrate our work.

Responsibilities:

• Upon starting, travel to Denver for a ramp up period with the existing team
• Quickly develop an understanding of the current architecture, it’s strengths and limitations, and will begin contributing to the codebase
• Within the first month, begin actively hiring additional resources to facilitate full stack development.
• Within the first two months, establish a foundation of domain knowledge that will guide your decisions  for yourself and your team, your collaboration with the business, your ongoing hiring goals. 
• Contribute to building shared APIs and a React application that can serve many applications and scale independently, focusing on the consumption of those APIs
• Provide constructive feedback on pull requests to increase code quality organically
• Build and adopt processes and implement best practices for coordination with other teams
• Guide and mentor new hires through the above, and guide them toward future career development
• Hold regular status meetings with development team
• Keep development team well informed of changes within the organization and general corporate news

Requirements

We need developers that share our passion for building and scaling cutting-edge Web (and eventually Mobile) apps in a fast-paced, well funded startup! We are looking for candidates who have:

• 6+ years in .NET development
• 2+ years experience developing web applications
• 2+ years experience as a leader on software development teams
• Ability to work as a Full Stack Developer with a keen eye for UI
• Experience working in an agile (scrum, kanban, or scrumban) environment
• Leadership and ability to mentor peers and junior developers
• Experience with hiring - planning and executing team growth strategies
