We have an exciting opportunity in our department for someone with a passion for computationally intensive research looking to use their skills in High Performance Computing to make an impact on research computing support.

We seek to develop a Research and Innovation programme that adopts and drives best practice. The service will facilitate the advancement of complex research by providing leading edge computing services. This is an exceptional opportunity to contribute to a Research and Innovation support Service dedicated to supporting world-class research at a fantastic University. This role is aimed at advancing our capability to meet the demands associated with developing and enhancing our provision of research computing services with an emphasis on research software and research computation facilities including High Performance Computing (HPC).

You will provide user and application support for research computing platforms supported by IT services including personal work stations, virtual machines and HPC facilities. You will provide support to researchers across a range of faculties using a range of tools for data analysis and computational modelling including ANSYS/FLUENT, ABAQUS, MATLAB and a number of in-house developed codes. You will support the Sheffield Advanced Research Computing Facilities. A specific service the team provides is support for running and developing parallel applications for HPC clusters using distributed and shared memory techniques, we also support the use of graphical processing units (GPUs) for visualisation and computation. Support is not restricted to local HPC facilities but is extended to virtualisation and container services sometimes making use of public cloud resources. This is a particularly interesting time to work with the team as we start to develop support over a wide range of areas including big data analytics, machine learning.

REPORTS TO Electronics Engineer

Position Objective:

Produce electronic designs to meet the current roadmap requirements within the timescales and to budget. Investigate latest related technology and proactively introduce solutions into existing and new designs. Work with the Test team to design test jigs for new projects to ensure high quality products are shipped into the market.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out feasibility studies and investigations of new projects
  • Perform costings and risk analysis
  • Carry out key-component selection through specification analysis and prototype testing
  • Write design and test specifications
  • Perform schematic capture and board layout
  • Perform design reviews internally and with key external suppliers
  • Validate prototype builds using test software and relevant test equipment
  • Prepare test and production documentation
  • Work with Test Labs on any certification issues
  • Work with the Production Test engineer on designing new Test jigs
  • Develop test scripts for pre and post assembly Test jigs
  • Investigate and solve any field issues

You will be expected to have some of the following skills:

  • Electronic design experience in a commercial industry
  • Good knowledge of Analogue and Digital Design including architecture, component selection
  • Design for manufacture, design for EMC
  • Experience designing with microprocessors/microcontrollers, memory devices, power
  • supplies, wireless communications (in particular integrating GNSS, GSM, LoRa, Wi-Fi,
  • Bluetooth and RF)
  • C/C++ for real-time embedded applications
  • Schematic, library and PCB layout experience, in particular using PADS, Altium

Useful non essential skills:

  • Programming language for test automation, in particular Java, Python, MATLAB and LabVIEW
  • Familiarity of world-wide Radio and Safety Certification processes

They will be looking for someone with expertise in deep learning (TensorFlow, Torch), building classifiers, clustering in high dimensions, pattern recognition algorithms and recommender systems. Experience with large datasets and modern data processing systems like Spark, Presto, Drill, Map Reduce will be required and also some experience with software engineering best practices (e.g., unit testing, code reviews, design documentation).

The successful candidate will have an advanced degree (masters, PhD) in machine learning or a related field and will have some familiarity with both supervised and unsupervised learning using regression and decision trees. The product is built in Python so although it is not essential, software development experience would be beneficial, along with strong machine learning/data analysis experience (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB, Tensor Flow, PyTorch, Sklearn, Pandas, DL4J, etc.)
