As the Software Automation Test Engineer you will work on my client's multi-platform cloud based product, undertaking manual tests and implementing continuous integration tests with a range of technologies.

THE CANDIDATE: The successful candidate for the IT / Software Developer post will need to hold a good technical degree or an equivalent qualification and experience, and although candidates do not need to be experts in all areas, you will need to have substantial hands on Software Development and Coding experience using either C# or Typescript, SQL, Python, or Javascript. You will need to be able to demonstrate a good understanding of software development design principals and patterns, and have strong analytical and problem solving skills, as well as being an excellent communicator in general.

The new IT / Software Developer will also need experience in object orientated development, as well as knowledge or an understanding of agile development methodologies within an environment using Continuous Integration, and will need to have experience using developing systems that contain multiple components. Candidates will also need to be a collaborative and team orientated individuals who are happy to share their knowledge and experience with Junior Developers and offer them mentoring or guidance where required, and although not essential, it would be highly desirable if candidates also have experience administering and maintaining services on Linux-based servers. A managed services/ IT support company is a special type of company. Unlike a network administrator who may get to perform one network upgrade every three years, each of our third line engineers performs multiple network upgrade projects every year. It is essential that our senior IT people keep current with the latest Microsoft Server software and can complete these network projects on time and on budget.

3rd Line IT Support Engineer Role Overview & Responsibilities:

We are looking for a talented third line engineer to primarily architect, install and support a wide range of servers and networks from small to medium sized businesses whilst keeping up to date with IT technologies and jointly lead the drive for technical knowledge within the engineering team.

Duties to include:

+ Design, implementation and support of Windows Server infrastructures and associated networks / backup solutions including cloud solutions when required.
+ Contract and ad-hoc incident/change support for our Cumbrian regional client base involving support to our clients via telephone, remote and on-site methods.
+ Development of SLA contracts alongside the Services Manager both from an internal processes/documentation perspective and dealing with new client contract requests, yearly analysis of existing contracts and renewals.
+ Ongoing development of LabTech and ConnectWise, our internal Remote Management & Monitoring and Helpdesk suites, regarding custom monitors, client security patching, ticket automation and integration between the systems.

3rd Line IT Support Engineer Technical Skills

Essential


+ At least five years of Microsoft server level IT experience.
+ Demonstrable troubleshooting skills that range from overall network diagnostics to Active Directory synchronisation and mail flow issues.
+ Experience with Server 2012 R2/2016/19, Exchange 2019/16/13, Office 365, Remote Desktop Services, Hyper-V, Active Directory.
+ Exposure to HP platforms and server hardware and hands on working knowledge of server hardware, RAID etc.
+ IP network design including routing, VPN, firewalls, VLANs, DNS, DHCP. Good knowledge in one of the popular firewall brands – Draytek, Fortinet, Sonicwall, Cisco, etc.
+ Experience in backup solutions, bare metal restores and disaster recovery.
+ A working knowledge of PowerShell.

Desired

+ Specific knowledge of Veeam, ShadowProtect, Datto and Eset solutions would be a bonus.
+ Experience with medium and large Wi-Fi networks including point to point Wi-Fi links.

Working in an agile environment you will work with technical colleagues alongside stakeholders from Product Management, Assessment, Teaching and Learning, Data Science and Design. The work will cover the development of new digital educational products, re-architecture of existing products and other exciting developments as CEM integrates as part of the Cambridge family.

Delivering a strategic vision. Working with colleagues across CEM and the wider Cambridge network you will work on the development of web-based systems that carry out innovative data science on educational data, providing guidance and resources to teachers that is then used to improve learning in the classroom.

Exciting times! Temporarily based at Ushaw College near Durham, we are moving to our vibrant new office based at Gateshead Quays from May 2020

What we’re looking for

  • With a relevant degree and relevant experience, you’ll have a track record in the development and delivery of software solutions that meet the needs of end-users and in line with business objectives.
  • You will be a technology professional with clear experiences along with a clear understanding of software development principles and practices.
  • You will be one of the key people developing software solutions at CEM. You will be adept at software development yourself and able to coach and mentor other members of staff.

Qualifications

  • A good technical degree or equivalent qualification and experience

Skills

Essential:

  • Demonstrable understanding of software development principles
  • Good coding and software development skills ideally using C# or Typescript
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills – written and verbal
  • Knowledge of agile development methodologies
  • Knowledge of software development design principles & patterns

Desirable:

  • Good coding and software development skills using Python, Javascript or SQL
  • Administering and maintaining services on Linux-based servers

Experience

Essential:

  • Object Orientated development  - ideally using C# or Typescript
  • Experience of developing systems that contain multiple components
  • Experience of working in Agile teams
  • Experience of all elements of the Software Development Life Cycle in a commercial environment
  • Experience of working in an environment using Continuous Integration
  • Experience of creating unit tests within a test driven development framework

Desirable:

  • Experience developing using Python, Javascript or SQL
  • Experience of administering and maintaining services on Linux-based servers
