Job description

Execution Developer - Java, Algo Trading

As an Execution Developer at Man you will be building the tools, platforms and algorithms that enable Man’s investment engines - AHL, Numeric and GLG - to drive forward their centralised global trading operation.   This includes internal algorithmic execution in Futures and FX, systematic routing of Global Equity as well as enabling access to liquidity in almost every other asset class.

Your challenges will be varied and might involve building new execution algorithms, the platforms on which they run, simulation environments, intelligent order routing, connectivity to execution venues and brokers, tools for manual traders, monitoring capability, post-trade performance analysis and software to optimise all aspects of the trading lifecycle.

We are continually expanding the markets, asset classes and regions in which we trade as well as the styles in which we trade them.  The team is responsible for designing imaginative and flexible tools to keep pace with this change.

We are looking to hire talented software engineers across the experience spectrum, and previous experience with almost any asset class will be an advantage.

The Team

The team is currently undergoing significant investment in order to rationalise the trading capability across AHL, Numeric and GLG.  The engineering team works exceptionally closely with both the Trading Desk and the Execution Research team in order to design, build and maintain a world-class trading capability.  We have trading floors in London, Hong Kong, Boston and New York and are responsible for trading in excess of 5 trillion dollars annually.

Our Technology

Our systems are almost all running on Linux and most of our trading applications are written in Java. We’re using TypeScript for web front-ends and Python for exploratory research.

We use Bitbucket for source control, Jenkins for continuous integration, Grafana + Prometheus for metrics collection, Docker for containerisation, OpenStack for our private cloud, Ansible for architecture automation, and HipChat for internal communication. But our technology list is never static; we constantly evaluate new tools and libraries.

Technology and Business Skills

You will be an expert software developer and ideally have an understanding of the financial markets with relevant electronic trading experience in at least one of the asset classes that we trade.  You’ll be a member of a highly-focussed team with an exceptionally broad responsibility, so great communication skills and an ability to work as part of a team are a must.  You’ll possess a significant proportion of the following skill-set;

Required

  • Expert proficiency in Java.
  • Python skills a significant advantage.
  • Excellent Database / SQL skills – ideally Oracle.
  • Great communication skills coupled with the ability to work closely with Researchers, Traders, Operations, Support and Developers alike to rapidly understand business requirements and build robust solutions.
  • A proponent of strong software engineering techniques and agile methods: continuous integration, code review, unit testing, refactoring and related approaches.
  • Proficient working on both Linux and Windows platforms.

 Advantageous

  • An understanding of financial markets and instruments
  • Experience of front office software and/or trading systems development e.g. in a hedge fund or investment bank, potentially using FIX.
  • Expertise in building distributed systems with service-based or event-driven architectures, and concurrent processing
  • Experience of web based development
  • Relevant mathematical knowledge e.g. statistics, asset pricing, time-series analysis optimisation algorithms.

Personal Attributes

  • Strong academic record and a degree with high mathematical and computing content e.g. Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or Physics from a leading university
  • Craftsman-like approach to building software; takes pride in engineering excellence and instils these values in others
  • Demonstrable passion for technology e.g. personal projects, open-source involvement
  • City of London
  • Competitive salary

What were looking for is someone who can grasp concepts quickly, has great attention to detail, and most importantly loves a tech challenge. In short, we’re a young team of self confessed geeks who love tinkering and tweaking until something is just right and are looking for someone who thinks and acts like us.

If you live and breath SQL and know your left joins from your inner joins then we would love to hear from you.

Location

Job description

Technology is fundamental to our work in looking after the homes of thousands of hosts across multiple cities worldwide in addition to ensuring hotel-quality stays for their guests. We are Airsorted - we make home-sharing hassle-free.

Catering for our hosts means that we hold responsibility for a multitude of customers on behalf of them - these also include their guests, cleaners and account managers.

We create each product with customer types in mind, and tailor these to solve their problems so that their time with us is as easy and intuitive as possible. We try to automate things wherever possible, but only if it's suitable - tech is brilliant, but we understand its limitations and try to work with them in every way we can.

Our mission is to build a global platform that makes it easy for everyone to share their home.

What will you be doing

We’re building Airsorted using Python 3, React, React Native, Flask, SQLAlchemy, PostgreSQL and Redis.

We care about agile principles and use good practices from Scrum and Kanban, but are not married to any single methodology. We pride ourselves in quality and collaboration. Every change we want to make to production code has to pass Continuous Integration and Peer Code Reviews before it can be merged in. This ensures that - for the majority of the time - we can run Continuous Deployment smoothly. It also allows us to deploy features and progress quickly, as well as identify potential bugs before they are deployed.

We work in squads are autonomous and make our own decisions on what to build (based on company goals), how to build it, and how to work together.

Day to day tasks

  • Participate in weekly group meetings with project manager and development team to celebrate achievements made in the previous week and to confirm planned tasks for the coming week.
  • Participate in daily, 15 minute morning standups with their ‘squad’ and designated project manager to report a) progress made on a given task, the previous day b) any obstacles faced and c) plans for the day.
  • Work daily, on one or more of their planned tasks (e.g development of a feature, bug-fix, etc).
  • Take responsibility in requesting peers for a code-review with a brief explanation of what the addition of this code aims to achieve.
  • From time to time, the developer will also be expected to monitor and respond to any tech-support questions. This task may include writing code to fix bugs and clarifying technical processes on how a given piece of in-house software may operate.
  • Write documentation on features produced, so that the knowledge of a given system/piece of code is shared with peers and consolidated as a single-source-of-truth for members of Airsorted to refer to.

So what is your background like?

  • Experience and interest working across the full stack: from creating client-side SPAs to developing and deploying Restful APIs
  • Experience with at least one modern front-end framework, React, Angular or Vue.JS would be awesome
  • Experience with Python, Ruby, SQL and AWS are all plus points
  • Experience and passion in implementing software development practices such as code reviews, pair programming, continuous integration, testing, writing documentation etc.
  • Experience working in a product-driven environment and collaborating closely with a product owner or head of product to drive it to the next level.
  • £80k - 90k
