Job description

About Us

At WeGift, we’re enabling value to flow further, faster and more freely. We’re completely reinventing the digital branded currency category, and creating a world where everyone has access to the global economy with no banks, borders, barriers or boundaries. To date we have built the industry’s premier digital rewards platform and are already working with the world’s leading brands like Amazon, Nike and Uber and corporate partners like Sky, Coinbase and Vodafone. Together we’re helping millions of people around the world store, send and spend value like never before.

We recognise that building a world class business requires a world class effort, so we make sure that each team member is appreciated for the unique value and skills they bring. We are driven by the knowledge that there are still millions of businesses and consumers (in a £600 billion industry!) that we can help. If you’re looking for an environment that will inspire you to dream bigger, work harder and make a difference every day, you’re in the right place.

The Team

Our technology team is a small group of passionate engineers and product managers who are right at the heart of core business processes. To give a few recent examples of new features:

  • WeGift Select. This allows us to give the customer choice, and therefore go beyond simply reselling gift cards and towards our strategic vision of helping value to flow more freely in the global economy. This project was technically challenging due to a requirement for it to work across a wide selection of devices.
  • Self-serve brand on-boarding. WeGift is growing rapidly, which means we have to challenge ourselves to use technology to give a great experience to our brand partners without them needing a lot of support from the customer success team.
  • Ongoing integration with gift card processors. Right at the heart of WeGift’s operations, this technology needs to scale seamlessly and maintain high standards of reliability, maintainability and security. We’re also constantly asking ourselves how we can make this process more efficient - how can we make a capital investment now to reduce operational spend in the future, and that in turn requires a creative take on the underlying technology.

Future projects you might be involved with include:

  • Continued development of our infrastructure. We pride ourselves on being at the cutting edge, and want to stay that way, for example, how can we make it even easier to get new functionality quickly into the hands of our customers?
  • Technical resilience. As we become more integral to our customers’ businesses, how can we make sure that we can continue to serve them even when there are technical or logistics issues upstream?

The Role

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer who is excited by the idea of building the world’s leading digital rewards platform and is enthusiastic about operating in a team that takes a modern approach to software engineering. At WeGift, you’ll have the chance to be a productive and effective product engineer in a fast-paced environment, creating real value while simultaneously receiving rapid feedback from the market. In short, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your skills way faster than you would in a larger, more traditional organisation. In addition, you’ll have the opportunity to work with a modern Python stack and up-to-date cloud infrastructure, and to develop your experience employing high quality product and software development practice. As a Senior Software Engineer you will be responsible for writing clean, scalable and reusable code to deliver the features on the company roadmap.

On a day to day basis you will:

  • Supporting a team to ensure we deliver clean, scalable, reusable and maintainable code.
  • Designing technical solutions to solve business problems.
  • Analysing, vetting and testing new technology choices.
  • Participating in code reviews to maintain code quality and coaching other team members on best practise.
  • Maintaining well documented release notes and change log.
  • Developing back-end components to improve responsiveness and overall performance
  • Integrating user-facing elements into applications
  • While this is not a manager role initially, we expect this person to become Team Lead within 12-16 months depending on performance. Thus, an interest in coaching and mentoring teammates is desirable.

Must haves

  • 8+ years of strong python development experience.
  • Good knowledge of HTML, JS and CSS and Linux is necessary.
  • Experience of working with a relational database and preferably knowledge of one ORM like, for example, SqlAlchemy.

Nice to haves

  • PostgreSQL
  • ES6+
  • Flask (highly desired)
  • Familiarity with Vue
  • Payment or financial service experience

  • £60-75k (DOE)

  • Participation in the Employee Options pool so you get to own a piece of WeGift.
  • Pension scheme (3% contribution)
  • Staff perks with WeGift brands - discounts of up to 12% on coffee, weekly groceries, holidays, the list is endless.
  • Flexible hours and work from home when needed - yes, yes everyone says this but we do.
  • A minimum of 25 days holiday + bank holidays (we’re not too descriptive about holidays so if you need more time off then just ask).
  • WeRecognise, where we shine the spotlight on exceptional employees every month who in turn get a £200 award in the eGift card of their choice.
  • Personal development budget - well actually there is no budget as we don’t believe in putting a cap on learning new things.
  • Generous maternity and paternity packages to make sure you get to spend time with your new bundle of joy.
  • Cycle to work scheme - save some £££ on buying a bike
  • Fully licensed as a tier 2 sponsor + relocation packages to help you get settled in.

  • Brand new WeWork office based in Monument, London or an uber cool Central Working space in Cambridge.
  • Catered team lunches every two weeks minimum.
  • Monthly team socials (Escape Rooms, Karaoke - everyone gets a chance to choose what this looks like)

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

Successful candidates will be contacted within two weeks.

Job description

We’re building a marketplace that enables families to find and share high quality nannies. As an engineer on the Koru Kids team, you’ll be designing and building tech to make complex matching problems a breeze, to give families and nannies a solution that just works, and to supercharge our nanny recruitment and training processes.

You’ll be working in Ruby for most of the backend, with RailsPostgreSQL and Redis making up the majority of our core product. You’ll be using modern frontend tooling, with ES6,React and Tachyons. When it comes to shipping code, you’ll be sending pull requests and doing code reviews in GitHub, and checking that CircleCI is happy before anything goes live. You’ll mostly be deploying to Heroku, with some heavy lifting on AWS. (That said, our priority is making sure we’re using the right tools for the job and we’re open to adding to or changing up our tech and tooling as appropriate.)

We’re continuously improving our product, building key features that will move the needle in a big way. Instead of an endless product roadmap, we run short development cycles to test assumptions and make smart decisions quickly. We favour feature flags over staging environments and deploy to production as often as we need to; deployment cycles shouldn’t get in the way of delivering value. As an engineer on the team, you’ll work closely with product and operations to find and build creative solutions for business problems and make sure we’re delivering the most value to our customers.

About you

You’re a mid-level or experienced generalist or backend web developer who thrives in small, fast-moving engineering teams.

  • Familiarity with web application development
  • Familiarity with relational databases and SQL
  • You take pride in writing readable, well-designed and well-tested software
  • You’re keen to pair program when appropriate, and generally enjoy a culture of code review
  • You’re humble, you lap up feedback, and you want to learn
  • You roll with it. You understand that startups are unpredictable environments, and are comfortable with a degree of chaos
  • You own it. You take responsibility for your work from start to finish

Not essential, but nice to have

  • Experience with Ruby on Rails
  • Familiarity with front-end development, including modern JavaScript frameworks and tooling
  • You practice test-driven development

Any of these profiles could be a great fit

  • Developer bootcamp graduate with at least one year of software engineering experience in industry
  • New graduate in Computer Science or related field and a couple of software engineering internships
  • Experienced software engineer with a number of years in industry
  • £32k - 36k
