Software Engineer - Core

Content, Supply & Distribution Technology:

Who are we

ITV is the biggest commercial television network in the UK. Behind every famous face, there are hundreds of others, all doing their bit to make things happen. We are More Than TV. We’re passionate about content and most importantly we understand our audiences. As a growing international company, we’re commercially minded and have a global focus. ITV is launching BritBox, an SVOD service later this year. We’re all about pushing the boundaries and being innovative.

Based at ITV’s iconic Television House in Leeds, we provide shared services and products that underpin the whole of ITV. We integrate with the old, and develop the new. Our Leeds Technology Hub work across a range of products covering Broadcast, Content and Rights systems.  Projects include the recently announced BritBox SVOD service, Schedule & Catalogue Modernisation plus some exciting roadmaps across the teams to keep us busy!

Our cross functional teams self organise following agile principles, working in a cloud first environment.

What we offer

An open, friendly and welcoming culture awaits you in one of the UK’s best known household names.  A supportive environment where there is opportunity to grow as an individual both technically and in responsibility both in your initial team and beyond should you wish.

To encourage learning we allocate one day per month as a Hack Day, we also organise regular Tech conferences (see ITV Tech Forum for some of our past ones).

We look after our employees. Work life balance is respected and flexible working is supported at a discretionary level.  There are regular social events organised within the team, AWS Game Days and departmental Away Days.

What we are looking for

We have an opportunity for a Core Software Engineer to join our Leeds Tech Hub. The successful candidate will display a genuine passion for technology, willingness to learn, and thrive as a member of a high-performing team.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Delivering quality, well tested and maintainable code that meets the requirements of the users in an incremental process
  • Identifying 3rd party libraries, and understanding the trade-offs between using them versus in-house development
  • Coming up with innovative and appropriate solutions to problems
  • Communicating effectively with stakeholders, business analysts, users, testers, and platform engineers to agree on solutions
  • Supporting and maintaining existing developed applications in production
  • Integrating with other ITV systems, both legacy and more modern
  • Understanding the build pipeline and how the applications are deployed
  • Sharing good practices and interesting content with other members of the wider team, e.g. via regular show & tell sessions
  • The ability to adapt to change as the team and ITV’s business grows and changes

Technology we use

  • Our in-house developed systems follow a microservices architecture, implemented using Java 8 (moving to 11) and Spring Boot/Dropwizard with Angular for any front ends. Our engineers typically work across the full stack, coding in Java, JavaScript, typescript, CSS, and SQL/Hibernate.
  • We work closely with platform engineers to build a CI/CD pipeline using maven, GitHub, Jenkins, terraform, and puppet, deploying to AWS. Work has begun to use Kubernetes as a platform for our deployed services.
  • We are constantly evaluating our technology choices, and are flexible for new projects. For example, we are currently evaluating Kotlin and Micronaut.
  • We use Google products for email and document sharing, Apple hardware for development, and Slack for internal communication.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join one of ITV’s leading technology teams and grow your career with the UK’s biggest commercial broadcaster. Why not be part of the future of television as opposed to watching it?

Job description

Are you a Front-End Developer looking to get into React and Redux?

Do you want to work on greenfield projects with global reach?

Then this is the perfect role for you!

The Role

Concrete is looking to accelerate the delivery of our product feature roadmap, and to make these goals a reality we are expanding the Front-End Development team, providing greater resources to decrease development times and enable more projects to be worked on simultaneously.

The current Engineering function is made up of five full-stack developers, four front-end developers, one back-end developer, two QAs, and two automation engineers. They work within small cross-functional teams, normally consisting of only 4-5 people.

Working predominantly in React, Redux and ES6+, the role will present plenty of opportunity to develop new skills within a supportive, Agile, front-end focused environment. Right from day one you will be actively involved in developing new features and building complex, thick client Single-Page Applications (SPAs).  With a decoupled front-end running off a variety of services, this is very much a hands-on coding role and you will live and breathe React, Redux and ES6+ (JavaScript) all day, every day.

We have our near-term roadmap laid out already, with some interesting projects to work on, including building an editorial workflow on top of a user permissions system, working on improving customer experience around custom content, and working on a mobile version of our platform.

What We Need

We need you to have a proven track record in development roles, with a specific focus on JavaScript and be motivated to move into a Front-End role.

You’ll have a background creating single-page applications (SPAs) using a modern JavaScript framework such as React, Angular, Vue, or Ember, and be able to discuss how state management affected your build.

To ensure our front-end works seamlessly, it is also essential that you have experience with unit testing, using tools like Enzyme, Jest, Mocha, Chai or Jasmine.

While you do not need extensive Back-End experience, you will understand how APIs function. We’ll be interested to hear how you made the Front-End environment communicate efficiently and effectively with the API.

We have a collaborative work environment, so you should enjoy working closely with other team members. You must be happy to work paired with another developer and should be able to discuss how this strategy can benefit your productivity, skills development, and the integrity of the wider project itself.

What You’ll Gain

You will be working in a supportive and flexible learning environment, including great opportunities to gain new skills – or hone existing ones – with technologies that are rapidly becoming industry standards, particularly React, Redux, and the latest features of ES6 (JavaScript).

You will get the chance to branch into React Native as well as gaining hands-on experience building data visualisations using the D3 JavaScript library, providing plenty of potential to develop a highly desirable skillset. On top of that, you will be working closely with Back-End Engineering and DevOps teams, so you will develop a strong foundation across the whole development lifecycle.

There will be regular opportunities to work on large greenfield projects with a genuinely global reach. We’ll trust and support you to truly take ownership of your work, providing real autonomy on the projects you work on. We’ve got your back if necessary, but you’ll be entrusted to get stuck in and put your skills and vision to work. We truly believe that brilliant products are built by teams that work brilliantly together; but brilliant teams can only be built with brilliant people.

Concrete work in partnership with Talent Point, a Hiring Communications business, who have designed this role on behalf of Concrete. When you apply, Aleks or Abbie will give you a call to tell you even more details about the role and help you through every step of the process.

Concrete are an equal opportunities employer and no terminology in this advert is designed to discriminate on grounds of gender, race, colour, religion, creed,
