Job description

We are looking for a Scala developer (or Java developer keen to learn Scala) who gets excited about creating elegant, scalable, robust and maintainable solutions to complex problems.

You’ll be developing on good kit alongside a friendly team at our Manchester HQ and around the UK. You’ll be working with a team of developers and designers to create new features and enhancements. You’ll develop your code in GitHub feature branches and pull requests that are regularly merged into master and shipped to customers frequently. We’re constantly improving Capsule so we ship new releases every day and can quickly see feedback from our customers.

Our large customer base is growing quickly and so this is a great opportunity to work with highly scalable systems. If you’re interested in full stack development you’ll have the option of also being involved with the development of our JavaScript frontend.

Your DevOps toolkit includes access to unified logging, application performance monitoring, statistics and stack traces from production environments for diagnosing issues, monitoring performance and understanding user behaviour. Capsule has a comprehensive Jenkins CI environment with an extensive automated test suite, static code analysis and monitoring for security vulnerabilities.

Deployment of Capsule is fully automated and releases are shipped to Amazon Web Services. As a result Capsule’s infrastructure and code is performant, reliable and available for our customers 24/7.

To help you get more in-depth knowledge of how the entire system works, the development team cycles through week-long stints working with our wonderful support and customer success teams. During these weeks, you’ll help resolve technical issues for customers and support third party developers who are using our API. You’ll be supported with a buddy when you need help getting to the bottom of an issue or raising it with the wider team.

If you would like to take part in development community events, we’ll support you with time to prepare and sponsor events where you are presenting.

We ask that applicants have a degree in computer science or equivalent industry experience.

Job description

What we do

Our embedded software engineers work with some of the biggest IoT and streaming TV businesses in the world. Our clients provide service to over 50 million paying subscribers worldwide, and the code they write drives the platforms that millions of people interact with every day of the year.

We work across the full software stack, developing cutting edge next generation platforms for streaming TV and other Internet of Things products, incorporating modern features such as voice interaction and cloud-connected services. We also work hard to maintain older workhorse products (embedded Linux-based cable and satellite TV boxes), which provide the interesting challenges of integrating new features into complex legacy stacks, improving performance and stability and working within the constraints of limited memory and CPU power.

The Graduate Engineer Role

We hire bright, confident graduates with a strong technical education, excellent communication skills, a passion for technology and a desire to learn and develop through hands-on work.

We don’t have a formal training programme – instead our graduates join real client-facing Scrum teams and deliver working code from the outset. You’ll work with your team lead and experienced colleagues to select tasks that will stretch your capabilities and allow you to learn on the job. Our clients use a range of technologies and programming languages – C++ and Java are common, but graduates are normally able to turn their hand to any language that they may be asked to use.

Your line manager will act as a mentor and you will work together to plan your career development and access any training required.

Where we work

Our Shipley, West Yorkshire office is a few miles outside both Leeds and Bradford. It’s a great place to live and work. We’re located mid-way between the urban and the rural – if city living’s your thing, you could set up home just 20 minutes away by train in Leeds’ bustling city centre, or find somewhere quieter to live in one of the surrounding towns or villages.

Close to work, there are great places to eat, drink (Yorkshire is awash with craft breweries, including Saltaire Brewery just around the corner from us), and relax, including the World Heritage Site of Saltaire a short walk away.

Compared to much of the country, rents are affordable and your competitive salary will go a long way.

About the team

As a consulting business, our team is our product, and you’ll be working with a great bunch of colleagues. We have a flexible approach to work - you can set your own working patterns that fit with the needs of your team and client, and while the role is predominantly office-based, occasional remote working is normally possible.

We have a friendly, small-company approach, meaning no big HR or IT departments to contend with. You’ll work closely with your line manager and project lead and they will ensure that you have access to all the tools and training you need to do your job effectively and develop your career in the direction that’s right for you.

Job description

What we do

Our embedded software engineers work with some of the biggest streaming TV businesses in the world. Our clients provide service to over 50 million paying subscribers worldwide, and the code they write drives the platforms that millions of people interact with in their free time, every day of the year.

Powering that lot is a range of hardware and software and we work across the full stack. Most of us love developing cutting edge next generation platforms (based on the likes of Android TV and RDK and incorporating modern features such as voice interaction and 100% on demand internet-streaming content). We also work hard to maintain older workhorse products (embedded Linux-based cable and satellite TV boxes), which provide the interesting challenges of integrating new features into complex legacy stacks, improving performance and stability and working within the constraints of limited memory and CPU power. Everything is online and connected where possible, so we work with networking technologies at every level, from WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity and network configuration, through to video streaming (HLS, MPEG DASH), cloud services and remote health monitoring.

The Tech Lead Role

Our Technical Leads are the key people in ensuring that our teams deliver what our clients need. You will set the technical direction for the team, helping them solve difficult problems and design solutions that work.

We work in Agile project teams, meaning every team member makes a crucial contribution, but often engineers need the right mix of encouragement and leadership-by-example to get the job done. You’ll advise on technical matters (whether that is architecture, the best way to write a piece of code or solve a problem, or performing a code review). You will be the main technical point of contact for our client, so you’ll be able to explain complex technical detail in a straightforward way. Sometimes you may do double-duty as a Scrum Master, making sure the team is sticking to their agile approach and focusing their attention in the right areas, as well as dealing with any impediments that get in their way.

As projects start up and ramp down throughout the year, you will get the chance to work with a variety of technologies and clients over your career here, keeping your skills fresh, and there are opportunities to develop into either a deeply technical or a line management role according to what suits you best.

Where we work

Our Shipley, West Yorkshire office is a few miles outside both Leeds and Bradford. It’s a great place to live and work. We’re located mid-way between the urban and the rural – if city living’s your thing, you could set up home just 20 minutes away by train in Leeds’ bustling city centre (which is only an hour further from Manchester and just over two hours from London). If you want to live in a stone-built cottage on an isolated hillside, or bring up your family in a traditional rural village or smart market town, you can do that and still be able to commute in 30 minutes or less (by car, bus, train; or even bike along the picturesque Leeds-Liverpool Canal, which passes right by the office).

Closer to work, there are great places to eat, drink (Yorkshire is awash with craft breweries, including Saltaire Brewery just around the corner from us), and relax, including the World Heritage Site of Saltaire a short walk away.

Compared to much of the country, house prices and rents are affordable, and we can offer a relocation package to successful candidates who are moving to the area.

About the team

As a consulting business, our team is our product, and you’ll be working with a great bunch of colleagues. We have a flexible approach to work - you can set your own working patterns that fit with the needs of your team and client, and while the role is predominantly office-based, occasional remote working is normally possible, and very occasionally you may be asked to travel to client sites for short trips.

We have a friendly, small-company approach, meaning no big HR or IT departments to contend with. You’ll work closely with your line manager and project lead and they will ensure that you have access to all the tools and training you need to do your job effectively and develop your career in the direction that’s right for you.

We'd love to see:

  •  A quantitative background (Probability, Statistics, Linear Algebra, etc.)
  •  Experience with distributed computational frameworks (Kubernetes, YARN, Spark, Hadoop)

If this sounds like you, apply!

And do check out our blog, TechAtBloomberg.com, to learn more about our publications and projects in data science.

Bloomberg is an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
