Job description

Senior Software Developer - London - Java / Kotlin / Python

I'm looking for a bright, talented, ambitious mid-senior level Software Developer who is looking to take a step up in their career (towards senior/lead) and pursue a quick path of career progression into Lead Engineering while using languages like Java, Python & Kotlin.  The CEO/CTO of a trading data analysis company in London is looking to create a software engineering division from scratch, though the company has 35 employees (a mixture of Quants & Data Scientists), so the successful candidate will be one of the first pure Software Engineers on site. Responsibilities include:

  • Architecting and developing a huge new platform from Quant notes written in a Jupyter Notebook which will serve as the go-to for all data analysis and operational needs
  • Setting up the dev environment with modern methodologies in mind which allows future Engineers to cut the highest quality code
  • Learning and creating production ready code with tools and technologies you have never previously used
  • Work alongside Data Scientists and Quants, understanding their technical requirements and producing clean, well-thought-out, scalable technical solutions
  • Work autonomously, researching the latest tools and software methodologies and suggesting / implementing innovative ideas to improve technical excellence
  • Take part in the recruitment process of future Engineers with the help of the CEO
  • Eventually, take up team leadership responsibilities and act as the team's technical expert and mentor

Required Skills:

  • An understanding of Python, Java and/or Kotlin - any other languages would be a huge plus
  • A 'right tool for the job' mentality
  • Previous experience with SQL
  • An appreciation of software development best practices, (Test Driven Development, for example) why they are necessary and when to use them
  • An understanding of DevOps
  • Commercial experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines
  • Some knowledge of Cloud Computing (AWS, GCP and/or Azure)
  • The ability to work both alone and in a team with a 'fail fast' mentality

This role requires an individual who is able to drive their own self-development under the wing of a very experienced CEO/CTO who is always there to help. The right candidate will be mentored and coached over time to become a key figure in this new software engineering division. If you feel you have the skills, curiosity and decisiveness required to help a team from scratch, please get in touch either on here or call on 0203 994 6400!

Job description

The role

Currently our technology hub of 30+ Engineers are located in Skopje, along with our CTO. But in the wake of the successful launch of our product, we are now accelerating development in line with our overall growth plans.

We are building a world class Engineering function here in London to complement our existing team in Skopje. To do this we need to hire a number of mid to senior level Software Engineers to act as the core of this new team, led by our newly appointed London based VP of Engineering.

What about you?

There are many definitions as to what makes a great Engineer and even what word best describes the job - Developer, Programmer? If you’re the sort of person who identifies themselves as a Software Engineer - someone who enjoys developing a breadth of skills instead of being a specialist and has a deep hunger to learn - then we want to hear from you!

‘Relevant experience’ can be a pretty broad term, but below are some criteria we value highly:

  • 5+ years of professional experience
  • Strongly typed language experience: Typescript preferred, but not essential. Others that are easy to convert from: Java, C#, Scala, especially if coupled with JavaScript experience
  • CompSci or technical education to degree level, but if not, then strong technical experience in previous roles
  • Strong demonstration of ‘quality first’ software engineering process experience: code review, Test Driven Design (TDD), automated unit/integration test, CI / CD systems
  • Design and Analysis experience
  • Been part of agile delivery teams (Scrum a bonus)

Bonus experience would include:

  • Amazon Web Services experience (AWS) preferred, other cloud providers Google Compute Engine / Azure would be easy to convert from
  • Been part of SaaS product engineering teams
  • 1 or more senior roles at different companies
  • Distributed systems experience
  • Node.js ecosystem experience nice to have

For senior candidates we would also be looking for:

  • 8+ years of professional experience
  • Demonstrated leadership in previous role(s) - this is technical leadership, but if there is genuine evidence of line management experience that is a bonus
  • Amazon Web Services experience (AWS) essential
  • Node.js ecosystem experience essential
  • Distributed systems knowledge.

Why join?

  • Work with some seriously smart and experienced engineers - our London leadership team is comprised of ex-Google and ex-Apple employees with experience of developing multiple large-scale distributed systems across multiple organisations and teams!
  • Help shape and define the next iteration of our product to set the foundations for a world-scale secure architecture.
  • Work alongside and collaborate with leaders in banking, law and tech, who are not only seriously smart but are also genuinely fun!
  • Have an impact in shaping a business - help us create an Engineering function which is not only building truly exciting things but is also a fun place to be!
  • Collaborative and transparent culture - feel empowered to come up with your own ideas  and actually make them happen
  • Stock options.
  • Flexible working - everyone who works at H4 is trusted to get the job done, so work when you want, where you want!
  • Regular team socials.
