You and Your Role

We are looking for talented and experienced Cobol Application Engineers who are skilled practitioners and established role models in Application Operations.

You will be responsible for ensuring best practice is adhered to and act as an experienced and competent leader guiding teams on how to deliver quality Applications.

You will support in the design of Application services working in collaboration with Architecture and Engineering principles. You will focus on operational stability, robustness, resilience, availability and quality while holding overall accountability for Application solutions.

The model of this assignment will provide a unique and exciting opportunity to work closely and collaborate with Senior Stakeholders and Software Engineers to deliver business critical products within set timescales, by thinking on your feet and being reactive to business requirements and translating these into technically viable solutions.

What are we looking for?

  • You will have significant and demonstrable experience of the Cobol Language; ideally Microfocus Cobol but also VME Cobol / System Control Language.
  • You will have significant and demonstrable experience implementing Software Engineering best practices.

  • You will have experience of the GIT revision control system.

Purpose of the role

The Data and Systems team within Ark schools supports a range of off-the-shelf and in-house developed software tools as part of its data eco-system. The Data & Systems Training Lead will be responsible for ensuring that all Ark Schools are supported to use each of these tools effectively and confidently.

The post holder will make regular visits to each school in the network, and deliver both standard and bespoke training to teachers and other school staff to support their use of MIS and other education support software. In addition, the post holder will support the Data & Systems Programme Manager in performing audits of the schools’ data quality and process efficiency, and follow up with training and support as necessary. The Data & Systems training lead will also be responsible for co-ordinating any third party training requirements.

They will take ownership of all aspects of systems training, sharing good practice and they will also help the team to innovate in the way that it interacts with Ark Schools.

Key Responsibilities (but not limited to)

Enabling the Ark data eco-system

  • Ensure that good practice is embedded across all users of software tools to support Ark Schools.

Providing data audit and support function

  • Liaise with the Systems Support Manager to support with application and system support issues beyond the usual scope of support (i.e. 2nd and 3rd line).

Facilitate training and staff development

  • Ensure robust and effective reference and training documentation is in place for the on-going use and development of in-house and third party applications.

Meeting Ark Schools’ data and assessment requirements

  • Work with the Education Team to ensure that schools are clear on the assessment, data collection, and reporting requirements of the network.

Communication with schools

  • Co-ordinate the production of the Assessment, Data & Systems weekly newsletter to schools.

About the role

The Organisation Data Service (ODS) is looking to find a high performing, knowledgeable and enthusiastic Service Management Practitioner. This role will report to the Programme Head and will co-ordinate and take responsibility for the production of service reports, resource management and overall co-ordination of service improvements and projects within ODS. The successful candidate will manage governance of our change control processes and ideally have proven Service Management experience at managerial level or project management experience.

ODS data underpins all major systems and services across health and social care. The ODS service is in a state of near constant change in order to keep pace with new requirements and as such it is a unique environment. The work is exciting and challenging, and with stakeholders in all areas of Health and Social Care and wider government, the effective management of our change processes is critical.

Current ODS change work includes for example, the introduction of data about primary care networks and extended access provision in general practice, as well as working to shape future provision of ‘digital’ GP practices.

This maternity cover position offers the opportunity for candidates with suitable skills and a proactive nature to work in a high-profile fast-moving environment and to develop and enhance their knowledge of the NHS.

As part of the role you will be responsible for:

  • Communicating extremely complex Service Management performance data using a variety of methods which are appropriate for the audience. Including extracting key information using analysis and interpretation from supplier documents, and presenting your findings (key data) in a condensed report which is clearly structured and can be widely understood

  • Actively looking to embed product management principles, approaches and methodologies into the heart of the project, and ensuring team members and other stakeholders understand them
  • Working closely with sales and marketing to develop the client proposition, and determine product pricing models
  • Managing stakeholders and reporting
  • Developing the business case to secure investment, and monitoring progress against OKRs
  • Designing and conducting interviews to understand the needs of the customer

As a member of the Innovation team, you may also be involved in coaching and upskilling PwC staff on innovation and product management methodologies.

Skills and experience - Essential

  • Demonstrable commercial experience in a product focused role, a strong understanding of product management methodologies especially in a business to business setting
  • Experience of working in Agile (e.g Kanban, Scrum) and applying Design Thinking methodology to solving problems
  • Experience in conducting customer interviews, and working with users to translate requirements into user stories
  • Strong commercial skill set with the ability to successfully understand and build business cases
  • Confident with working in a fast-paced environment and playing an integral part in the building and development of products
  • Ability to switch between big picture thinking and the detail
  • Experience of interacting with senior stakeholders and communicate with impact (both verbally and written)
  • Degree level qualification or equivalent by qualification or experience
  • Relevant technical certifications and/or professional project management qualifications

Skills and experience - Desirable

  • Knowledge of key emerging technologies, current trends and their potential disruptive impacts
  • Experience of working with and managing relationships with 3rd party design and development houses
  • Experience of working in (or with) a professional services firm or consultancy

C# / VB.NET Developer (3-Month Contract)


A C# / VB.NET / IAM Developer is needed on a full-time fixed term contract for 3 months to join one of the largest and most diverse universities in the UK. As part of a dedicated team you will be responsible for delivering the next phases of the University's Identity Management service.

With over 120,000 students in London and a further 50,000 studying across the globe, our client is an established educational institution renowned for excellence and its world class reputation.

Joining as a C# / VB.NET / IAM Developer you will be responsible for delivering components according to the design principles and processes used by the Identity and Management Service. Using your experience in one or more of the following: Active Directory, LDAP queries, Microsoft SQL Server, C#.NET AND VB.NET. You will need to work efficiently and adapt to an existing development plan.

To qualify. You should be an experienced IAM Developer / Systems Administrator Analyst / Programmer / Project Manager or similar with a CV that demonstrates:

  • Experience with database development;
  • Experience is creating DB triggers, stored procedures, functions and indexes;
  • Experienced in VB.NET or C#;
  • Basic IAM knowledge;
  • Experience managing Active Directory and LDAP including writing LDAP queries;
  • Solid knowledge of Window's Basic Sever operations.
