You will have worked with the back-end developers to create and optimise the design of the API that the front-end will communicate with.
The front-end will have evolved significantly based on the needs of our pilot clients and student feedback.
The founding team you work with will run as an efficient and highly productive unit.
You will work in a supportive manner with other team members and provide them with the support and coaching for them to grow.

Requirements:
We are looking for a Mid to Senior level Front-End Developer to play a central role in building the front-end of our platform; designing, planning and ensuring the best technologies and tools are used for the job. Taz is a completely new communications channel that will change the way you communicate with the people that matter to you most. We are still in stealth mode right now, and looking for someone to help us power through to launch and beyond! It’s based on authenticity, exchange and communicating a glimpse of what your reality is Right Now, with absolutely no lurking.

We have just closed our funding round which was lead by Michael Birch (Ex-Founder of Bebo) and a raft of very prominent angels in London including the Ex-CTO of Mind Candy.

Taz is being led by Tariq Aris and George Green, both experienced founders, who have scaled and exited consumer-facing startups in the past.

We are about to finish up development of our first MVP version and are looking for someone to help us out with some ad-hoc QA testing of our Android app. Ideally to start ASAP as we are keen to move towards launch in the next few weeks.

Job description

What we do

Our embedded software engineers work with some of the biggest streaming TV businesses in the world. Our clients provide service to over 50 million paying subscribers worldwide, and the code they write drives the platforms that millions of people interact with in their free time, every day of the year.

Powering that lot is a range of hardware and software and we work across the full stack. Most of us love developing cutting edge next generation platforms (based on the likes of Android TV and RDK and incorporating modern features such as voice interaction and 100% on demand internet-streaming content). We also work hard to maintain older workhorse products (embedded Linux-based cable and satellite TV boxes), which provide the interesting challenges of integrating new features into complex legacy stacks, improving performance and stability and working within the constraints of limited memory and CPU power. Everything is online and connected where possible, so we work with networking technologies at every level, from WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity and network configuration, through to video streaming (HLS, MPEG DASH), cloud services and remote health monitoring.

The Tech Lead Role

Our Technical Leads are the key people in ensuring that our teams deliver what our clients need. You will set the technical direction for the team, helping them solve difficult problems and design solutions that work.

We work in Agile project teams, meaning every team member makes a crucial contribution, but often engineers need the right mix of encouragement and leadership-by-example to get the job done. You’ll advise on technical matters (whether that is architecture, the best way to write a piece of code or solve a problem, or performing a code review). You will be the main technical point of contact for our client, so you’ll be able to explain complex technical detail in a straightforward way. Sometimes you may do double-duty as a Scrum Master, making sure the team is sticking to their agile approach and focusing their attention in the right areas, as well as dealing with any impediments that get in their way.

As projects start up and ramp down throughout the year, you will get the chance to work with a variety of technologies and clients over your career here, keeping your skills fresh, and there are opportunities to develop into either a deeply technical or a line management role according to what suits you best.

Where we work

Our Shipley, West Yorkshire office is a few miles outside both Leeds and Bradford. It’s a great place to live and work. We’re located mid-way between the urban and the rural – if city living’s your thing, you could set up home just 20 minutes away by train in Leeds’ bustling city centre (which is only an hour further from Manchester and just over two hours from London). If you want to live in a stone-built cottage on an isolated hillside, or bring up your family in a traditional rural village or smart market town, you can do that and still be able to commute in 30 minutes or less (by car, bus, train; or even bike along the picturesque Leeds-Liverpool Canal, which passes right by the office).

Closer to work, there are great places to eat, drink (Yorkshire is awash with craft breweries, including Saltaire Brewery just around the corner from us), and relax, including the World Heritage Site of Saltaire a short walk away.

Compared to much of the country, house prices and rents are affordable, and we can offer a relocation package to successful candidates who are moving to the area.

About the team

As a consulting business, our team is our product, and you’ll be working with a great bunch of colleagues. We have a flexible approach to work - you can set your own working patterns that fit with the needs of your team and client, and while the role is predominantly office-based, occasional remote working is normally possible, and very occasionally you may be asked to travel to client sites for short trips.

We have a friendly, small-company approach, meaning no big HR or IT departments to contend with. You’ll work closely with your line manager and project lead and they will ensure that you have access to all the tools and training you need to do your job effectively and develop your career in the direction that’s right for you.
