Job description

Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.

Facebook created and open-sourced GraphQL, a query language for describing the capabilities and requirements of data models for client‐server applications, in 2015. Since then, GraphQL has been adopted by a number of companies big and small, as well as the open source community. GraphQL is heavily used within Facebook by our web front-ends, mobile & desktop apps.
GraphQL being the de-facto way of fetching data in our apps, we have since started working on system-wide optimizations across our apps & backends. In a traditional client-server design, engineers working on the client & the frameworks available to them are disconnected from the efficiency of the queries they send, efficiency of the backend implementations and integrated cost of the entire system. We are working to bridge the gap between mobile engineers and backend execution of Facebook social graph queries, by building cross stack tooling integrated with development workflow. In the process, we are also building new features into GraphQL and frameworks on top of GraphQL that can adapt data fetching based on different system-wide events.

Responsibilities

  • We look for expertise in building or understanding end-to-end systems, from mobile UI down to mobile infrastructure all the way to backend infrastructure. Experience rolling out new frameworks & APIs across large codebases will be very useful too.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of object-oriented software development
  • Mobile application development experience
  • C++ or Java

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of multi-threading and memory management specific to mobile devices and caching mechanisms
  • Experience building complex applications for the iPhone or iPad using Objective-C / C++ with Cocoa and other frameworks
  • Experience of building Android applications in Java using Android SDK

Job description

Data Engineer

Starling is a bank – but not as you know it. We have built a bank that will change people’s relationship with money and it’s our mission to give customers the opportunity to feel more in control of their everyday money and financial health – so they can enjoy the things that matter most. In 2016 we announced a funding round of US$70m and were approved as a bank by the regulator – one year later we became the first mobile-only current account in the UK and we have just celebrated our first anniversary since our launch.

We are looking for technologists who specialise in database performance and data engineering to join a small, dynamic and agile team of technologists, entrepreneurs, designers, brand and customer experts with a flat structure in building a next generation bank. We’re building from scratch and are using the latest in technology to create a bespoke experience, delivered through your phone.

We have built our own banking system and have our own full ‘technology stack.’ Our development approach is agile-based, enabling rapid software upgrades and we are one of the first banks completely in the Cloud using Amazon Web Services. Our engineers are committed to keeping up with Apple and Android developments and delivering our updates efficiently to both systems. Have a look at our GitHub to see what our developers have been up to, and our Roadmap to see what we are looking to develop and deliver in the next 12 months! You can also see what was created from our first Hackathon which gave over 100 people the chance to come and flex their developer muscles. Our open APIs are unique in the banking world and create exciting opportunities for integration with other FinTechs such as Flux, Habito, Wealthify, PensionBee and more through the Starling Marketplace.

Could you see yourself here? We’d love to hear from you.

We are currently looking for 2 Data Engineers to join us – one senior and one junior – and are open to perm employees or a temp-to-perm arrangement.

In either of these roles, you will be:

  • Responsible for the data platform in the bank which covers online relational database, application logic, data pipelines and big data analytics tools;
  • Optimising the performance of and contributing generally to data processing elements of the banking platform;
  • Contributing to the development of analytics capabilities across the various services within the Company;
  • Working with the data science and machine learning specialists on a day to day basis;
  • Implementation of database monitoring tools and diagnostics and proactive monitoring and management;
  • Making improvements to the build-time and deployment-time mechanisms used for database changes;
  • Optimisation of database queries and general usage, for the purposes of both acceptable performance and of correctness;
  • Evangelism of best practice and training sessions to the wider engineering teams.

Requirements
A can-do attitude, belief in our vision, and a willingness to roll-up your sleeves and get stuck in to anything and everything.

We don’t have a long list of requirements where specific skills and experience are concerned - instead, all that we ask is that you are a skilled, caring, invested, passionate engineer! Having said that, it's worth noting that:

  • You'll ideally have lots of experience building high performance code.
  • You'll be comfortable writing complex queries against large relational databases.
  • We use Postgres a lot.
  • Software development skills should include Java or anything similar.
  • Nice to have experience of ETL / Data pipelines / Big Data toolsets.

We want to hear from people who love building things, creating new stuff, learning new technologies and skills and working with other great people across all different teams and areas to create a fantastic product.

Benefits
Check out our careers page for perks!

Job description

Before you start reading, keep in mind that the aim of this job ad is to give you a feel for what it’s like to work at Catapult. There’s lots of research which suggests people often don’t apply because of so-called “requirements” in a job description. If you’re an experienced engineer, like the sound of working here and see something you’re not an expert in yet, that’s great, apply and you can learn it here!

What you’re getting yourself in for

Our mission is to build the worlds best part time job. We spend our time thinking about how to give a global workforce complete control of their own work life while completely automating the hundreds of thousands of man hours which would normally be required to manage people on this scale.

We do this through React Native based iOS and Android applications, React based web applications, a mixture of Ruby/ Rails and Phoenix/ Elixir on the backend and Rest API’s to communicate with machine learning services from our data science team.

Businesses ranging from the largest high-street retailers to five star hotels and and independent coffee boutiques rely on Catapult as their casual workforce. If you’ve spent time in London, you’ve probably been served by a Catapult waiter or sales assistant without even realising it!

Our company values https://writing.joincatapult.com/our-values/ are really important to us and influence every facet of how we work together.

Things we’ve been working on recently

No two days are ever the same in a startup, but to give you a flavour of what we’ve been up to recently:

  • Building a stand-alone signup service to test different approaches to user on-boarding. We took this as an opportunity to test out Phoenix + GraphQL. We were so impressed with the productivity boost we’re also now incorporating GraphQL into our primary Rails application
  • Using Kubernetes to deploy standalone environments for our feature branches, complete with anonymised production data
  • Re-thinking how we test Javascript and what the line should be between unit tests and acceptance tests

About the role

We’ve been growing rapidly over the last three years and as we start our international roll out, we’re looking for ambitious engineers to help us build the future of work. Our engineering principles https://writing.joincatapult.com/engineering-principles/ give a good feel for how we work together and what we value.

You’ll be working joining out remote team so working from anywhere in Europe is fine! We work in small cross-functional pods of developers who focus on a particular product area and encourage people to rotate across teams.

Benefits

As well as being a part of a well funded startup at one of the most exciting phases of it’s growth, you’ll get:

  • Competitive salary + stock options
  • A strong approach to professional development and mentorship, everyone has a dedicated L&D budget for books, training, conferences and the like
  • Product retreats at least every two months where the whole team either comes to London or goes somewhere warm (the next one's in Lisbon!), looks back on how we can improve and then spends a week together hacking on new ideas and exploring new technologies
  • Regular social events & the opportunity to travel to our other offices
  • Company Macbook Pro which you’re free to take home
  • A flexible work environment focused on output not hours
  • 25 days holiday + bank holidays
  • £60k - 85k
