Financial Controller (Commercial & hands-on)
Competitive salary, plus share options and Perkbox
Blackcurve is a fast-moving London-based SaaS pricing optimisation platform that helps high-profile online and offline retailers make smarter pricing decisions. We work with businesses across Europe and as we grow, we’re looking for an energetic, talented and strategically-focussed Financial Controller to join us to take sole ownership and build our Finance function.
This is a rare opportunity to work in a role that includes all aspects of Finance, not just the transactional! We’d love you to be a multi-faceted, qualified, commercial Accountant, ACA, CIMA or ACCA from a SaaS background, ideally retail focussed, but we’re open on that. You’ll definitely have worked within a SME or startup, that’s fast-paced and growing. You’ll be keen to support decision-making and take a key role in business planning, through your commercial acumen and modelling skills. You’ll develop our internal financial controls, implement processes and systems. You’ll also take charge of the delivery of clear, insightful management information. You’ll love being hands-on, you’ll have a great eye for detail and you’ll also relish the opportunity to make an impact both commercially and operationally.
This broad-ranging role will include strategic, transactional, operational and commercial aspects, and as we grow, you’ll be able to develop a small team and gain exposure to fund-raising and other strategic functions. We’d like you to have presented at Board level if possible and you MUST be happy to carry out the transactional day-to-day reporting, as well as contribute commercially. This is initially a sole charge role and therefore we’d expect you to roll your sleeves up and get things done.
Your core responsibilities as our Financial Controller will include:
Developing robust financial and management reporting processes that will help us to scale. You’ll take responsibility for implementing appropriate Accounting software.
Working closely with our senior leadership team to help develop our strategy for growth.
Developing robust financial models, budgets and long and short-term business plans. You’ll provide commercially sound analysis to facilitate key decision-making by our senior leadership team.
Managing and executing AP / AR, credit control, payroll, statutory requirements and management accounting for the business globally (we do have a part-time bookkeeper, so your role will include managing the information they produce).
Managing, conducting and improving our month-end and year-end close processes
Analysing costs, pricing, variable contributions, sales results and the company’s actual performance compared to the business plans
Controlling business expenses and managing cashflow
Supporting our fundraising processes – identifying opportunities, exploring investment options, pitching, when required and responding to information requests.
Producing quarterly forecasts and annual profit reports. You’ll also monitor, forecast and analyse our costs and revenues and budget vs actual.
Preparing & monitoring monthly, quarterly and annual statements (balance sheets and income statements)
Managing investor relations – updating dashboards, preparing reports and participating in board meetings as required
Managing vendor, client and partner (including banking, legal & HR) relationships and representing the business in negotiations or new relationships
Developing financial trends and projections, and reporting to our SMT.
As well as your Accounting qualifications, you’ll be a proactive, tenacious, well-rounded Accountant. You’ll ideally have at least 2-3 years post-qualification experience, in a No.1 role within a small Finance function, and you must have worked in a fast-moving technology business, ideally SaaS. You’ll also have:
Advanced MS Excel. You’ll need to be able to build basic financial models.
Experience in supporting senior management in making key decisions. You’ll be able to challenge without being confrontational - you’ll love being a business partner. Ideally you’ll have presented at Board level.
Superlative reporting and analytical skills.
A clear ability to work independently. You’ll be a self-starter, proactive and also resilient.
Hands-on experience with financial and statistical software, such as Xero.
Up-to-date knowledge of accounting laws & regulations, ideally some international exposure.
An innate ability to present financial data in a clear, non-technical manner.
A hands on approach, as well as being able to view the bigger picture and make strategic decisions.
Demonstrable strategic acumen that’s underpinned by an ability to dig down into the detail to understand what’s really happening.
A strong educational history, ideally a relevant degree or similar, plus an Accountancy qualification.
A desire to work in a growing startup. You’ll have a fresh, entrepreneurial approach but you’ll also present as grounded, measured and technically astute.
An ability to deal with change and an ability to offer solutions quickly and prioritise accordingly.
If you think this sounds like you, and you'd like a wide-ranging Finance role in a growing business - and you fit who we're looking for, please tell us more!
You may also work as Financial Manager, Finance Manager, Group Finance Manager, Head of Finance, Finance Director, Sole Charge Financial Controller or similar.
